About Kenya

Kenyan Parliament BuildingKenya is located in the East Africa region of Africa.

There are several traditional stories regarding the origin of the name Kenya.

One is that the Kamba community called it Keenya, meaning the place of snow, due to the snow at its peak. Now the European visitors were unable to pronounce the word Keenya, hence the adaptation to Kenya.

Another story is that while the Kikuyu people called it Kirinyaga or Kerenyaga, meaning mountain of whiteness, the British found the names too long and opted for the shortened version of Kenya.

Kenya has a rich diversity of climate, natural resources, wildlife, and habitats of its people with their rich cultures. It is not possible to see and appreciate Kenya in a hurry, and therefore one needs to decide on one area of attraction at a time.

The capital city of Kenya is Nairobi; other cities are Mombasa and Kisumu. Major towns include Nakuru, Eldoret, Nyeri, Embu, Meru, Thika and Kakamega.

The Kenyan FlagThe main airport is Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi, which handles scheduled international flights. Other international airports are Moi Airport Mombasa, Eldoret Airport, and Kisumu Airport, with regular domestic flights between these airports. Wilson Airport in Nairobi handles light aircrafts, scheduled and chartered domestic flights.

extremely encouraging but at the same time humbling.
