Travelling is a soul-stirring, life changing kind of experience. And there is nothing that kills the mood more than only getting free WiFi for one hour and having to sit on a hard, plastic chair for five hours.
Luckily, there are wonderful places inside airports that offer a sanctuary from the churning chaos of airport terminals and outrageously overpriced food. Little bits of paradise that smell of freshly-brewed coffee, warm pastries, and the sweet scent of being able to sit on a cushioned chair and take a shower.
These mystical places are airport lounges. And they are worth every cent.
Especially if it’s operated by Turkish Airlines.
Famous for their decadence and passion for indulging their passengers, Turkish Airlines has a small but exclusive selection of airport lounges in four countries:Turkey, the United States, Moscow, and Kenya. Its most recent addition is the Turkish Airlines Star Alliance Lounge at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport inNairobi, which opened in July 2016.
The lounge is located in Terminal 1E, airside, next to Gate 4A, and unlike many lounges, is open 24 hours. It is exclusive to passengers departing on international flights. Transit passengers can access this hidden gem from the 2nd Floor on the Departures Level.
Its entrance, a latticed glass door flanked by two plants in gold pots, hints at the luxury and comforts that lie beyond and welcomes you in like an old friend.
The interior, a sophisticated tapestry of mocha wood, buttermilk beige, pine green and marble, captures the exotic allure of Turkey. Curved archways create a sense of space, while the textured walls and mirrors laced with gold reflect contemporary Ottoman flair.
A spread of hot and cold dishes tempts you with sweet scents and bright colour. Fresh fruit, traditional Swahili mandazi, and spinach Turkish pies are some of the delicacies you might find, while the bar offers coffee and a wide range of beers, spirits, and non-alcoholic beverages.
And when it comes to seating, puffy sofas and soft chairs sprawl across the warm wooden floors, abundant and irresistible after a seven-hour haul.
Step through the curtained doorway and you will find yourself in a dark TV room adorned with sapphire walls and cream sofas. This little slice of nirvana is a great place to watch a film, reflect on your journey, or take a nap. But if you need a quiet space for contemplation and religious reflection, a prayer room is also available.
If you are travelling with kids, televisions, PlayStations, and a dedicated children’s play area will keep the young ones busy while you shake off the stress of travelling.Note: children under two years old are admitted free with an adult.
Other amenities include:
- Disabled Access
- Internet Terminals & WiFi

The Turkish Airlines Alliance One Lounge offers 440 square metres of Turkish opulence and elegance, and it is not just for the elite. All travellers can gain access to the lounge by buying a lounge pass or becoming a priority pass member. And if you are lucky, you can get direct access by paying at the door.
A lounge pass must be purchased 24 hours in advance and should coincide with the time you will be in the airport. As a priority pass member, you will have access to over 1000 airport lounges around the world, including the Turkish Airlines Star Alliance Lounge at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Guests will only be allowed to pay for access if space is available.
Turkish Airlines wants to encourage people to explore and discover Africa, and what better way to attract them than with an airport lounge that embodies their trademark boldness, passion, and style.
